Well, you normally need to be signed in to show up as a contributor and to leave an entry, so that's the first step. Just looking at the blog and leaving a comment doesn't necessarily mean that you're signed in. I see that Dad isn't even listed as a member of this blog, so I'll go ahead and send him an invite so you can set him up separately from Mom.
If you're looking at the blog page, on the upper left hand corner is the blogger symbol. Click on that and it will take you to the sign in page. From there, you sign in and then click on the blog name to get to the page that will let you make entries, edit things, etc. Creating an entry is rather similar to writing an email, but when you're done you click "publish post" instead of "send".
